Transforming Clinical Information into Meaningful Life-Saving Insights Through AI

Pentavere was born as a response to a simple and hard-hitting question— why is it we have all the data we need for financial markets to make money but don’t have the information we need to save lives? Data is critical to public health and disease surveillance. But unfortunately, around 80% of vital healthcare data is unused as it is scattered or buried across many sources including clinical notes, lab tests, and diagnostic reports. To sort through these unstructured data and gain better insight into patients, healthcare organizations need an efficient and reliable technology partner.

And this is precisely where Pentavere comes into the picture. Pentavere uses Artificial Intelligence technologies and best in class clinical research methodologies to extract real-world data buried in unstructured sources in a way that is research and evidence grade. As one of the fastest-growing healthcare technology companies in Canada, it transforms the clinical information into meaningful life-saving insights and real-world evidence at a speed and accuracy that few thought possible.

The Guiding Light of Pentavere

One of the driving forces behind Pentavere’s success is Dr. Christopher Pettengell, the chief medical officer of Pentavere. His extensive healthcare experience, practical insights, and tenacious leadership have enabled the company to stay committed to its mission of unleashing the power of healthcare data to save lives.

Prior to joining Pentavere, Dr. Pettengell spent over 10 years treating patients as a general surgeon in the UK. But as much as he loved being a surgeon, he grew frustrated with the scarcity of meaningful Real-World Evidence that could substantially increase a patient’s chance of recovery and survival. If such life-saving data could somehow be mined from decades of inaccessible silos of clinical notes and patient histories, it would substantially reduce costs and improve the efficacy of medical practitioners, clinics, hospitals and healthcare authorities.

“By unlocking this valuable information, Pentavere is empowering all stakeholders in the healthcare community to harness the full potential of their data so they can improve health outcomes and save lives.”

“All practicing clinicians are faced with the need to make life-and-death treatment decisions. Doctors have to rely on their intuition because of a lack of meaningful data that could substantially increase the odds of patient recovery and survival. This approach to medicine is just not good enough,” explains Dr. Pettengell.

So, he set out to develop a rudimentary database with surgery-related outcomes that scientists, clinicians, and patients could use to better understand why patients respond differently to different treatments. But he soon ran into significant problems. Most of the data existed in huge complex depositories of clinical notes that would need to be painstakingly deciphered one patient record at a time and then manually entered into the correct fields of a computer program. Only then would it be possible to mine and analyze the data to generate meaningful insights and conclusions. Therefore, he started exploring IT solutions and it was not long before he discovered Pentavere– a Toronto-based startup which was using AI and Natural Language Processing technology to quickly and accurately automate the input and curation of clinician notes into digital records that could generate meaningful insights to guide care. Fascinated by this approach, he reached out to the Pentavere team and as discussions began to evolve, he felt a shared sense of purpose. This propelled Dr. Pettengell to make the life-changing decision to quit his job as a surgeon and move to Canada to join the Pentavere team and realize his vision of integrating health data into clinical decision-making to deliver better care for patients.

Unleashing Valuable Data through DARWEN™

Pentavere eliminates the challenges and limitations associated with manual data abstraction for medical research. The existing manual data extraction process is labor-intensive, time-consuming, inconsistent, and does not capture the true reality of real-world patient populations. But with Pentavere’s DARWEN™ technology engine, the real-world evidence can be extracted quickly, economically, consistently, accurately, and in large volumes. This enables clinicians to convert inaccessible, raw data into meaningful, actionable information that can enhance both patient engagement and the effectiveness of their treatments. Many hospitals, health networks, researchers, and pharmaceutical companies are using DARWEN™ to derive valuable information buried in unstructured clinical documentation within an electronic health record.

“By unlocking this valuable information, Pentavere is empowering all stakeholders in the healthcare community to harness the full potential of their data so they can improve health outcomes and save lives,” says Dr. Pettengell.

The AI-driven engine can reduce the economic barriers to developing comprehensive research, facilitate regulatory approvals of medical innovation, and provide patients with more personalized, meaningful care information.

Blazing the Path Forward With a Diligent Team

Today, under the leadership of Dr. Pettengell, Pentavere is relentlessly working to make a significant impact on the health and lives of people. Working alongside a group of diverse people with complementary skills, the aspirational team at Pentavere strives to solve big problems in healthcare with tenacity, unwavering focus, and dogged determination to save lives.

“We are clinicians, technologists, scientists, and engineers. We are senior leaders with diverse backgrounds who left the corporate world to solve a big problem affecting everyone in healthcare. We find the needles in the haystack that save lives,” asserts Dr. Pettengell.

Moving forward, the company aims to continue unleashing the power of data and stay true to its vision to enable the healthcare sector to move to the next frontier of data management.

“The measure of success we set for ourselves is the impact our technology and expertise has on the lives of people. We will stay true to that mission and focus on solving the problems that impede the creation of high quality real-world evidence and lifesaving insights,” concludes Dr. Pettengell.
